The Feast of Corpus Christi: 2017 Programme

Corpus Christi is a Catholic feast commemorating the body of Christ in the Eucharist. In Valencia, we celebrate it in a unique way. Find out more about all the different traditions and events that take place during this time on my previous blog post otherwise you’ll be wondering what the devil is going on.

2017 PROGRAMME 

FRIDAY 16TH JUNE

9.00am: The Rocas (Rocks) are taken from their home at Casa de las Rocas (Carrer de les Roques, 3) and left at Plaza de los Fueros (next to Torres de Serranos – Serrano Towers) so they can be admired by the public.

8.00pm: The Rocas (Rocks) are taken from the Plaza de los Fueros to the Plaza de la Virgen next to the basilica and cathedral. They will remain here on exhibition until they will be used on Sunday.

12.00am: Nit d’Albaes. Traditional folk dancing and singing around the following streets: Carrer de les Roques, Carrer del Palau, Carrer de Serrans, Carrer dels Cavallers and Plaza de la Virgen.

SATURDAY 17TH JUNE

10.00am: Water buckets are installed on Carrer dels Cabillers & Carrer de les Avellanes ready for the Poalà.

7.30pm: Mystery plays on the stage set up in Plaza de la Virgen.

11.00pm: Municipal Band of Valencia concert

12.00am: Nit de Festa. Prizes for adorned altars, streets, façades and balconies are given out.

SUNDAY 18TH JUNE (THE BIG DAY)

9.00am – 9.30am: Bell ringing from the Torre del Micalet (Micalet Tower)

10.30am: Church service at the Cathedral of Valencia

12.00pm: Cabalgata del Convite (Invitation Parade) and its many Corpus Christi dances such as La Moma & Gegants.

  • Itinerary: Plaza de Manises – Calle de Caballeros – Plaza de la Virgen – Calle del Micalet – Plaza de la Reina – Calle de Cabillers, Calle de las Avellanas & Plaza de la Almoina.

12.00am – 12.30am: Bell ringing from the Torre del Micalet (Micalet Tower).

4.30pm: Paso de las Rocas (Rock Parade).

  • Itinerary: Calle de Caballeros – Plaza del Tossal – Plaza del Mercado – Calle de María Cristina – Calle de San Vicente – Calle del Mar – Calle de las Avellanas – Palacio Arzobispal de Valencia. The rocks will then be taken back to their home via Calle de las Avellanas – Calle del Mar – Calle de la Paz – Calle del General Tovar – Plaza Tetuan – Plaza del Temple – Calle del Pintor López – Calle del Conde de Trénor – Plaza de los Fueros – Calle de las Rocas.

5.15pm: Carts full of myrtle will be scattered on the streets.

5.30pm: Corpus Christi Dances: Gegants i Nanos, la Magrana & La Moma i els Momos.

7.00pm: Solemn procession of the eucharist.

  • Itinerary: Cathedral of Valencia (Apostles Entrance) – Plaza de la Virgen – Calle Caballeros – Calle de la Bolsería – Plaza del Mercado – Calle de María Cristina – Calle de San Vicente – Plaza de la Reina – Calle del Mar – Calle de las Avellanas – Palacio Arzobispal de Valencia – Plaza de la Almoina – Cathedral of Valencia.

7.00pm – 9.00pm: Bell ringing from the Torre del Micalet (Micalet Tower).

THURSDAY 22ND JUNE

6.30pm: Corpus Christi Octave. This is a separate Corpus Christi celebration that takes place at the Corpus Christi Seminary College featuring 16th Century rites established by the Seminary’s founder, San Juan de Ribera (AKA El Patriarca). The church where it takes place is absolutely beautiful and can only be visited with official guides for 7€ but on this day you can enter freely. Location:  Carrer de la Nau, 1.
