Andalusian Fair: Flamenco, horses & Sherry

You are not in the minority if when you think of Spain you automatically picture a sun-drenched land stained with the blood of bulls where people wile away the day having a siesta, eating tapas, drinking sangria while singing and dancing Flamenco. However, this is all more representative of Andalusia and not Spain in general.

In Valencia we do fit the stereotype of being a sun-drenched land stained with the blood of bulls, unfortunately, and OK we also eat tapas but we only have siestas during the summer when it’s too hot to do anything else, only ever serve Sangria to tourists (be a local and order Tinto de Verano instead) and Flamenco is hard to come by.

However, at the end of April, you could be lead to believe that the typical stereotypes actually ring true as the Andalusian population of Valencia gets together dressed to the nines in their frilly Flamenco attire and Flamenco music, especially Sevillanas, is definitely in the air.

WHAT?

For the past 25 years, the Andalusians of Valencia have celebrated their Andalusian cultural heritage at this fair mirroring the famous Feria de Abril de Sevilla (Seville April Fair). It’s 7 days of Andalusian partying with Flamenco music and dance performances, horse riding, drinking, eating and lots of showing off.

Andalusian Cultural Associations part of the FECACV (Federation of Andalusian Cultural Entities) will each have their own caseta (marquee tent) where they will showcase flamenco music and dancing as well as offer typical Andalusian food. Here’s a map of the fairground to get your bearings.

Food and drink wise, look out for pescaito (fried small fish), rebujitos (Fino Sherry mixed with sparkling lemonade) and Sherry (none of that sweet sickly stuff grandparents drink in the UK but proper Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado and Oloroso).
